Clean Stove, Dead Burner: What Went Wrong During the Scrub

Stove burner won't light after cleaning? Moisture, a misaligned cap or clogged ports are almost always the cause. Here's how to dry, reseat and clear it safely.

In one line

A gas burner that stops lighting right after a cleaning almost always has a wet igniter, a cap or burner head that's sitting slightly off, or ports packed with cleaner or food, and all three are usually fixed without parts.

What's going on

Most modern gas cooktops use sealed burners made of a few stacked pieces: a base, a burner head with small ports around the edge, and a cap on top. A ceramic igniter sits beside them and sparks when you turn the knob. For the burner to light, gas has to come out evenly through the ports and reach the spark. Any piece that's out of place or blocked can stop it.

Water is the usual culprit after a cleaning. A soaked igniter or burner can spark weakly or not at all, and moisture around the switches can make burners click longer than normal until things dry out. Cleaners and loosened grease can also dry into the ports. A cap sitting just a few millimeters off center can give an uneven flame or none at all.

What you can check in five minutes

  1. Turn every knob off and let the cooktop cool. If you smell gas, stop, leave and call 911 or your gas utility from outside.
  2. Lift off the cap and burner head, dry them fully, and let the burner area air-dry for a few hours.
  3. Look at each port. Clear clogs gently with a straightened paper clip or a pin. Avoid toothpicks, which can snap off inside.
  4. Wipe the igniter tip dry and look for cracks in the white ceramic.
  5. Reassemble so the head sits flat and the cap is centered with no wobble. Your manual often shows the alignment.
  6. Try lighting. If the flame is uneven or yellow, turn it off and check the cap again.

Rent, own or co-op: who handles it?

Cleaning and reseating burner parts is normal upkeep in any home. If the range came with the apartment and a burner still won't light once it's dry, tell the super, who may send the building's own technician. Anything involving gas piping goes to the building. When in doubt, ask the super before calling anyone in.

What a technician will look at

  • •Igniter electrodes and their porcelain insulators
  • •The spark module and the burner switches behind the knobs
  • •Burner orifices and gas flow
  • •Flame quality and color on every burner
  • •Whether moisture got into the wiring or switches

Andre's field note: I hear "I cleaned it last night and now it won't light" all the time, and usually a few hours of drying is the whole fix. If the top burners have trouble lighting just after the building's gas comes back on, that's a different situation, with different rules. A cracked igniter or a dead spark module is real stove repair work.
