Bosch Dishwasher Not Draining in NYC: E24 Error Explained

Bosch's E24 drain error is the most common Bosch dishwasher complaint across Brooklyn and Queens. Here's what causes it in NYC apartments and how to fix it — often without a service call.

Bosch is the most installed dishwasher brand in renovated Brooklyn and Queens apartments — we see it in gut-renovated Bed-Stuy brownstones, new construction Long Island City condos, and Forest Hills Tudor homes alike. And the E24 error (drain blocked) is by far the most common Bosch service trigger. Here's the full diagnosis.

What E24 Actually Means

E24 doesn't mean the drain pump has failed — it means the Bosch control board detected that water didn't drain within the expected time window. The cause could be anywhere in the drain path from the filter at the bottom of the tub to the drain connection under the sink.

Step-by-Step Diagnosis for NYC Apartments

Step 1: Clean the Filter (Solves 30% of E24 Cases) Bosch dishwashers have a three-part filter assembly at the bottom of the wash tub — a flat mesh filter, a cylindrical fine filter, and a coarse filter. In NYC apartments where the dishwasher is used heavily, these fill with food particles, broken glass, and mineral scale from NYC water.

To clean: Remove the lower rack, turn the cylindrical filter counterclockwise and lift out, then pull up the flat mesh filter. Rinse both under running water, scrubbing with a soft brush. Food deposits and calcium scale should come off with hot water — for heavy scale, soak in white vinegar for 15 minutes.

Step 2: Check the Drain Hose (Solves 20% of Cases) Pull the dishwasher forward slightly (usually 4–6 screws under the countertop secure it) and look at the drain hose — a corrugated plastic tube connecting the dishwasher to the drain under the sink. In NYC under-counter installations, this hose is often: - Kinked at a sharp angle where it exits the machine - Looped too low under the counter (allowing backflow) - Crushed by the dishwasher being pushed back too hard against the hose

The drain hose should form a high loop — rising to the underside of the countertop before going down to the drain connection. If it runs straight down without this loop, water can siphon back into the dishwasher.

Step 3: Check the Sink Drain Connection (Solves 15% of Cases) The dishwasher drain connects to either a garbage disposal inlet or a dedicated dishwasher inlet on the sink drain. In NYC apartments: - If connected to a garbage disposal, run the disposal before starting the dishwasher — accumulated food debris can block the connection - Check that the knockout plug was removed from the disposal inlet during installation (a common installation oversight) - If the sink drains slowly, this will affect dishwasher drainage — snake the P-trap

Step 4: Test the Drain Pump (If Steps 1–3 Don't Resolve It) With the filter clean and the drain path confirmed clear, run a drain-only cycle (hold the start button for 3 seconds on most Bosch models). If you can hear the pump running but no water is moving, the pump impeller may be blocked by a foreign object. If the pump is silent during the drain cycle, the pump motor or the drain solenoid has failed — this requires a technician.

NYC-Specific Causes of Recurring E24

Hard water mineral buildup: NYC's mineral content causes calcium deposits on the pump impeller over time, reducing drain efficiency. Running the dishwasher monthly with a dishwasher cleaner tablet (Finish or Cascade brand) and a cup of white vinegar in the bottom prevents this.

Building drain pressure: Some Brooklyn apartment buildings have older main drain stacks with partial blockages that create intermittent back-pressure. This causes E24 to appear randomly rather than consistently. If E24 appears after heavy building-wide use (mornings and evenings), building drain is likely the cause.

When to Call ProFix

Call us if: the filter is clean, the drain path is clear, the sink drains freely, and E24 still appears. This narrows the cause to the drain pump, the drain solenoid, or the control board — all of which require a technician and parts. Most Bosch drain pump repairs run $180–280 parts and labor.
