GE Profile Oven Not Working in NYC: Error Codes, Common Failures, and Repair Costs

GE Profile ovens are a common upgrade choice in Brooklyn and Queens kitchen renovations. Here's what the most frequent error codes mean and what repairs cost in the NYC market.

GE Profile ovens occupy the upper-mid tier of the GE lineup — above the standard GE line but below the premium Café series. They're a popular choice for Brooklyn and Queens kitchen renovations where homeowners want reliable performance and connected features without luxury appliance pricing. When a GE Profile oven stops working, the diagnosis follows predictable patterns.

GE Profile Oven Error Codes Explained

F2 — Oven Temperature Exceeded Limit F2 means the oven's control board detected that the oven temperature exceeded the safe operating limit. This doesn't necessarily mean the oven actually overheated — it often means the temperature sensor is reading incorrectly high.

Most likely cause: Failed oven temperature sensor (also called the RTD sensor). The sensor is a thin probe inside the oven cavity, visible at the upper back corner. When it fails in a short-circuit condition, it reads artificially high temperatures and triggers F2.

Test: With the oven cold, measure resistance across the sensor terminals — should read approximately 1,080 ohms at room temperature. Significantly lower = short circuit = failed sensor.

Sensor replacement: $100–180 parts and labor. It's one of the simpler oven repairs.

F3 — Temperature Sensor Open Circuit Opposite of F2: the sensor is reading an open circuit (no connection), usually because the sensor wire has broken. The oven won't heat because the control board can't confirm temperature.

Same sensor replacement procedure as F2: $100–180.

F7 — Stuck Key or Touchpad Fault F7 indicates the control panel's touchpad has a stuck button or a failed pad. In NYC apartments where the range is near the sink and subject to moisture and grease, this is a common failure mode — moisture infiltrates the touchpad membrane and causes false key detection.

Temporary fix: Disconnect power for 60 seconds and restore. If F7 reappears immediately, the touchpad needs replacement. In GE Profile models, the touchpad is often integrated with the control board — replacing both together ($300–500) is sometimes more cost-effective than replacing the touchpad alone if the board is borderline.

F9 — Door Lock Failure F9 indicates the self-clean door lock mechanism has failed or is stuck. In NYC apartments where the self-clean cycle is used frequently, the door lock motor and switch wear faster than in lower-use environments.

F9 with the door locked: the door cannot be opened. ProFix technicians carry tools to manually release the latch in this situation without damaging the door mechanism.

GE Profile Oven Not Heating Without Error Code

Bake Element Failure The bake element (lower element) is the most commonly replaced oven part across all brands. In GE Profile electric ranges, a failed bake element is usually visible — look for breaks, blistering, or burn marks when the oven is cold and empty.

Bake element replacement: $100–180 parts and labor.

Igniter Failure (Gas Models) GE Profile gas ranges use a hot-surface igniter that glows before gas flows to the oven burner. A weak igniter glows but can't reach the 2,500°F needed to open the gas safety valve — the oven attempts to light repeatedly but never ignites.

Igniter replacement: $150–250 parts and labor.

Control Board Failure GE Profile's control boards manage every oven function. Board failures can cause any symptom — no display, no heat, random error codes, or specific functions failing while others work. Board replacement: $250–400.

NYC-Specific GE Profile Considerations

Slide-in range clearance: GE Profile slide-in ranges are designed to sit flush with kitchen countertops. In Brooklyn kitchens with older tile countertops or non-standard depths, the range may not sit correctly, causing the door or control panel to rub against the countertop edge. This is an installation issue, not an appliance fault.

Connected features (WiFi): GE Profile's SmartHQ connected features can cause diagnostic confusion — the app may report errors that reflect connectivity issues rather than appliance failures. Before calling for service on a connected GE Profile, reset the WiFi connection and run the built-in diagnostics from the physical control panel.
