How to Read Appliance Model Numbers: An NYC Homeowner's Guide

Knowing how to read and interpret your appliance's model number is one of the most practical skills a New York City homeowner or renter can have. The model number tells you who manufactured the appliance, when it was made, what features it has, and what parts it needs — information that is critical for getting the right repair and for making smart replacement decisions. Here is everything you need to know about appliance model numbers in NYC homes.

Where to Find Your Appliance Model Number

Every appliance has its model number on a label (sometimes called a nameplate or data plate) that is usually located in a somewhat inconvenient spot. For refrigerators, look inside the fresh food compartment on the door liner, the upper wall, or the ceiling of the compartment. For dishwashers, open the door and look on the inside edge of the door or on the door frame. For washing machines, front-loaders have the label on the inside of the door frame; top-loaders typically have it on the rear of the cabinet or inside the lid opening. For dryers, check the inside of the door frame. For ovens and ranges, the label is usually on the frame behind the storage drawer, on the back of the range (difficult to access), or on the left side wall inside the oven cavity. Take a photograph of the label as soon as you can access it — you will need this information whenever you call for service or order parts.

What the Model Number Tells You

Appliance model numbers are not random strings of characters — they encode information about the appliance in a format that is specific to each manufacturer. For Samsung appliances, the model number encodes the product type, size, feature tier, color, and year of manufacture. For example, in the model number RF28R7551SR: RF = refrigerator, 28 = 28 cubic feet, R7 = feature tier, 5 = specific design, 5 = sub-version, 1 = color code, SR = stainless steel. For LG appliances, the model number similarly encodes product category, capacity, feature set, and color. The key digit that tells ProFix NYC technicians what year an LG appliance was made is embedded in the model suffix. For Whirlpool and Maytag appliances, the first three digits often indicate the manufacturer within the Whirlpool family (Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana all share some components). For Kenmore appliances, the first three digits reveal the actual manufacturer: 106/596 = Whirlpool, 253 = Frigidaire, 795/796 = LG — critical information because parts are sourced from the original manufacturer, not from Sears.

The Difference Between Model Number and Serial Number

The model number identifies what type of appliance it is — all appliances of the same model are identical in terms of parts and design. The serial number is unique to your specific unit and encodes the manufacturing date and production sequence. Knowing the serial number allows a technician to determine the exact manufacturing date, which is relevant for warranty claims (warranties run from the manufacture date, not always the purchase date), recalls (some recalls cover specific serial number ranges), and identifying which component revision was installed at the factory (some models have different parts depending on production date).

Using Model Numbers to Get Better Service

When you call ProFix NYC for appliance service, having your model number ready allows our technicians to arrive with the most likely parts already on the truck — significantly increasing the chance of a same-visit repair. Appliance repair technicians who look up your model number before arrival can identify known issues specific to that model, carry the right parts, and complete the repair in one visit rather than ordering parts and returning. Write your model numbers down and keep them in your kitchen drawer or in your phone's notes.
