Amana started in 1934 in the Amana Colonies of Iowa, a communal settlement that had been manufacturing since the nineteenth century, and it made a genuine mark on the industry. Amana introduced the first countertop microwave oven for the home, the Radarange, in 1967, taking a technology that had existed only as commercial equipment the size of a refrigerator and putting it on a kitchen counter. The company was an early force in side-by-side refrigeration as well. For a brand that today sits at the value end of the market, that is an unusually substantial history of actual invention.
The ownership history explains where the brand ended up. Raytheon acquired Amana in the mid-1960s, which is how the microwave expertise arrived. Goodman bought it in 1997, then sold the appliance business to Maytag in 2001 while retaining the Amana name for heating and cooling equipment. Whirlpool acquired Maytag in 2006, bringing Amana appliances into the Whirlpool family where they remain. This is worth knowing for a practical reason: an Amana-badged furnace or through-the-wall heat pump comes from the separate HVAC business now under Goodman and Daikin, and it is not the same company as the Amana refrigerator in your kitchen, which is a Whirlpool product.
Amana's role within Whirlpool today is the value tier, and its engineering follows accordingly. Controls are electromechanical rather than touchscreen, feature sets are deliberately basic, and the mechanical layouts are conventional and accessible. There is no smart connectivity to fail, no capacitive touch panel to go dead, and no proprietary inverter platform to source. Whether that is a limitation or a virtue depends entirely on what an owner wants, and for a rental unit, a second refrigerator, or a household that simply wants an appliance to work without a software layer, the simplicity is a real advantage.
The most useful thing to understand about Amana is that its value positioning does not mean isolation. In a tenement-era kitchen with a 28 inch alcove between cabinets, the practical question is which manufacturers still build something that fits, and value-tier lines like Amana are consistently among the answers when premium brands have moved on to larger formats.
The simplicity of the controls turns out to be a genuine advantage in New York apartment buildings specifically. Older buildings frequently deliver 208 volt three-phase service rather than 240, and the shared, heavily loaded circuits in a prewar building produce voltage conditions that electronics-heavy appliances do not always tolerate gracefully. An Amana range with mechanical infinite switches and a simple thermostat is largely indifferent to that environment. The 208 volt supply will still slow an electric range's preheat compared to its 240 volt rating, but that is physics rather than a fault, and we confirm the supply before anyone replaces an element.
