Much of the Upper East Side consists of cooperative apartment buildings, many of them prewar, run by managing agents with a resident superintendent and door staff. Roosevelt Island has a different profile: it is made up almost entirely of mid-rise and high-rise residential buildings, without the walk-up stock found across the river. Apartments there generally have elevator access and an on-site management office, and the newer buildings on the island are more likely to feature built-in kitchen packages and in-unit laundry. Access and paperwork questions resemble those in Manhattan co-ops, even though the drive in is different.
