Two waterways explain much of the area's history. The Erie Canal ran across the northern part of the territory, and its traces remain: Camillus Erie Canal Park preserves a section of the old channel with the restored Nine Mile Creek Aqueduct and a replica of Sims' canal store, and in Jordan the original canal route ran right through the village before the Barge Canal shifted traffic to the Seneca River in 1918.
