Jamaica Estates and the blocks around it hold some of the largest single family houses in Queens, big Tudor and colonial homes on generous lots with mature trees, and kitchens that have usually been renovated at a level closer to Westchester than to the rest of the borough. St. Albans includes Addisleigh Park, a landmarked historic district of substantial homes with a genuinely notable history as a residential enclave for Black musicians, athletes and professionals during the mid twentieth century. The Rockaways are unlike anything else in the borough. Far Rockaway, Rockaway Park, Belle Harbor and Neponsit sit on a narrow peninsula between Jamaica Bay and the Atlantic, and the building stock ranges from converted summer bungalows and small frame houses to oceanfront co-op towers and rebuilt homes now sitting on raised foundations after severe storm flooding. Some units are year round primary residences and some are used seasonally, and a kitchen that sits idle for months develops a completely different set of problems than one that runs every day. Woodhaven, Ozone Park and South Ozone Park fill in the middle with tight brick rowhouses, many of them two family, on blocks where a service van parks on the street and the appliance comes out through a narrow hallway.
